Soprano Mari Moriya is one of today’s leading dramatic coloratura sopranos. Her “beautiful voice … and clean and precise coloraturas” (Der neue Merker) are but two of her notable assets in the dramatic coloratura as well as lyric repertoire, which encompasses bel canto heroines Lucia and Maria Stuarda as well as Puccini’s Mimì and Liù.
In the 2017-18 season, Mari Moriya will make her debuts as Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier and Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly with Tokyo Nikikai Opera Theatre. She will also return to Opera Vlaanderen to sing the role of Ms Schlesen in Philip Glass’ Satyagraha. In 2016-17 she appeared as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at the Aichi Triennale 2016 in Nagoya City, Konstanze in Entführung aus dem Serail at the Nissay Theatre in Tokyo, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at Suntory Hall, Freia in Das Rheingold with Biwako Hall and made her debut as Leonora in Il Trovatore with Mikawa City Opera.
In 2015-16, Mari Moriya brought her Queen of the Night back to Oper Leipzig, where she first sang it in 2009-10, and then reprised the role one last time at the Theater Basel. Further career highlights this season included her debut as Violetta in Robert Wilson’s new production of La Traviata at the Landestheater Linz, where she also created the role of Lara/Chang’e in Moritz Eggert’s Terra Nova, Micaëla in Carmen at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt as well as Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Nishinomiya.
Highlights of previous seasons were her successful debut at Opera Vlaanderen as Queen Tye in Philip Glass’ Akhnaten, as well as staged performances of the soprano solos in a scenic version of Carmina Burana and the role of Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier at the Landestheater Linz. As a member of the ensemble in Linz between 2009 and 2014, she not only sang major coloratura roles such as the title heroines in Lakmé and Maria Stuarda, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Clorinda in La Cenerentola, and Gilda in Rigoletto, but was also able to expand her repertoire to successfully portray lyric roles like Mimì, Pamina and Micaëla.
In 2006 Mari Moriya made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York as Queen of the Night under the baton of James Levine. Since then she has performed this role numerous times with leading opera companies in Europe and the United States, including Palm Beach Opera (2006), Pittsburgh Opera (2007), Portland Opera (2007), Glyndebourne Touring Opera (2008), Oper Leipzig (2009-10), Baltimore Opera (2010), Seattle Opera (2011), Scottish Opera (2012), Volksoper Wien (2012-13) and Landestheater Linz under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst (2013-14).
She first appeared in Europe with Opera Ireland in 2007 as Liù in Turandot and returned to Dublin as Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos (2008) and Zerlina in Don Giovanni (2009). Other career highlights include Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Lucia di Lammermoor, both with the Israel Vocal Arts Institute in Tel-Aviv, Amina (cover) in La Sonnambula with Opera Orchestra of New York, Linda di Chamonix (cover) at the Caramoor Festival, Juliette in Roméo et Juliette with Center City Opera Philadelphia, Norma at the Chopin Festival in Gdansk, Adina in L’elisir d’amore with Tulsa Opera and Clorinda at the Salzburger Landestheater.
On the concert stage she performed Beethoven’s Ninth with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bruckner Orchester, a New Year’s Concert with the Sinfonieorchester Basel and Verdi’s Messa da Requiem under the auspices of the Kusatsu International Summer Festival.
Mari Moriya was born in Oyama, Japan, and studied at the Musashino Academy of Music in Tokyo (Master of Music) and at the Mannes College of Music in New York (Professional Studies Diploma). She was a Grand Finalist at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2005 and won awards in major international singing competitions such as Cardiff Singer of the World (Concert Prize – 2007) and Belvedere Singing Competition (Hans Gabor Sonderpreis – 2008).
