The young mezzo soprano Xiaoyi Xu began her vocal studies in 2006 at the Conservatory Beijing, completing her Bachelor’s Degree in 2010. She continued her training with a Eurasia-Pacific Uninet scholarship at the University for Music and the Performing Arts in Graz, where she studied with Claudia Rüggeberg.
While studying in Graz, she began performing roles that included Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Dorothea Caccini in Donizetti’s Viva La Mamma, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel as well as The Mistress of the Novices in Puccini’s Suor Angelica. Between 2012 and 2014 she was a member of the Opera Studio Graz, where her roles included Second Witch in Dido and Aeneas, Mercédès in Carmen, Meg Page in Falstaff, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Flora Bervoix in La traviata and the Madrigal Singer in Manon Lescaut. In September 2013 she successfully debuted as Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Mumuth Graz, and subsequently performed the Third Lady in The Magic Flute, Barena in Janacek’s Jenůfa and again Hänsel, all at Oper Graz, where she also covered the role of Leonore in La Favorite.
Between 2014 and 2015 Xiaoyi Xu was a member of the ensemble of Oper Graz, performing roles such as Amastris in Handel’s Xerxes, Brigitta and Lucienne in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt, Rosette in Massenet’s Manon and again the Third Lady. She also made guest appearances as Barena (Jenůfa) at the National Theater Brno (2014), as Carmen at the Fujian Fuzhou Great Theatre in China (2016) as well as Dorabella at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium.
In the 2016-17 season Xiaoyi Xu sings the role of Hänsel at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, where she also will be heard as Apak in the opera Neda by Iranian composer Nader Mashayekhi. Another important debut will follow in the summer with the Wiener Festwochen and under the baton of Simone Young as Blumenmädchen in Bernhard Lang’s adaption of Wagner’s Parsifal. This production will subsequently transfer to the Berliner Festspiele.
