Daniel Bubeck – counter tenor

Acclaimed American counter tenor Daniel Bubeck has emerged as a singer of international distinction in opera and oratorio from the baroque to contemporary masterpieces. Engagements in the 2011-12 season include Handel’s Messiah with the Lexington Philharmonic, John Adams’ El Niño with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra in Tallinn and in May 2012 he will perform in The Gospel according to the other Mary, a new oratorio by John Adams with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. In the previous season he made his debut with the San Francisco Symphony (El Niño conducted by the composer), he sang Messiah at Saint Thomas Church in New York as well as the title role in Handel’s Rinaldo with Opera Vivente in Baltimore. Mr. Bubeck made his professional opera debut in the world premiere of Adams’ El Niño, directed by Peter Sellars and conducted by Kent Nagano at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris opposite Dawn Upshaw, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and Willard White. He has since performed the work on four continents in over 20 different productions with esteemed festivals, opera companies and orchestras such as Boston Symphony, BBC Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester-Berlin, Tokyo Symphony, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Holland, Adelaide Festival, St. Louis Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Ravinia Festival, Malmø Opera and Royal Flemish Philharmonic. Noted in particular for his interpretations of the works of Handel, Mr. Bubeck has performed and covered operatic and oratorio roles including the title role in Giulio Cesare (IU Opera Theatre), David in Saul (Central Florida Bach Festival), Guido in Flavio and Arminio in Partenope (both with New York City Opera), and he sang concerts with Handel arias with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s as well as numerous performances of the Messiah. Other notable engagements include the role of Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Princeton Festival, excerpts from Phillip Glass’ Akhnaten with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by John Adams, Henze’s Das verratene Meer with the Tokyo Symphony, the American premiere of Lost Objects by composers David Lang, Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon with Concerto Köln, the title role in Scarlatti’s Tigrane at the Bloomington Early Music Festival, and Carmina Burana in São Paulo (Brazil) and with the New York City Opera’s VOX new music project. Mr. Bubeck can be heard on recordings of El Niño (Nonesuch Records – CD and Art Haus Musik – DVD) and the masses of William Byrd with the Indiana Pro Arte under Paul Hillier (Harmonia Mundi). He also sang for the soundtrack of the Warner Brothers thriller I Am Legend, starring Will Smith. Daniel Bubeck is a native of Wilmington, Delaware and holds degrees from Indiana University, Peabody Conservatory and the University of Delaware. He also studied at the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh, the Salzburg Mozarteum, Attersee Barock Akademie and Oberlin Conservatory’s Baroque Performance Institute. He was a winner in the 2009 Liederkranz Vocal Competition and recipient of a Sullivan Career Grant.
