Kyros Patsalides – Verdi baritone

Kyros Patsalides was born in Cyprus and studied music at the Conservatory in Athens with Kostas Paskalis (he graduated with distinction), parallel to his law studies at the University in Athens. He also attended master classes with Ileana Cortubas, Luigi Alva and Jannet Pilou. With the help of the scholarship “Stiftung für Musik und darstellende Kunst” he was able to move to Vienna where he completed his vocal studies with KS Gottfried Hornik and KS Walter Berry. In 1995 Kyros Patsalides won the first prize at the International Singing Competition in Budapest.

Since his successful debut as Belcore in “L’elisir d’amore” at the State Opera Budapest under Maestro Richard Bonynge, he has sung in numerous European opera houses, such as the Greek National Opera, the State Operas in Belgrade, Prague and Skopje, the Teatro Comunale di Spoleto, the Arena di Verona, the Teatro Comunale di Modena, the Teatr Wielki (Poland), the Staatstheater Chemnitz (Germany), the Teatro Jovellanos (Spain) and many more. He began his career as a lyric baritone, but soon moved into the Kavalier- and Verdi baritone fach. Nowadays his repertoire encompasses roles such as Rigoletto, Macbeth, Germont, Renato, Alfio, Silvio, Riccardo (in Bellini’s “I Puritani”) and Omar (in Rossini’s “L’assedio di Corinto”), as well as Escamillo, Valentin, King (in Orff’s “Die Kluge”) and Donner (in Wagner’s “Das Rheingold”).  In recent years he had resounding successes as Escamillo at the Herodius Atticus Theater-Acropolis in Athens, as Germont at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall and as Marcello at the Greek National Opera. In the 2008-09 season he returned to Mozart singing the role of Guglielmo in “Così fan tutte” at the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall (a co-production with Teatro Filarmoniko-Verona), and in 2009-10 he sang further performances of Marcello at the Greek National Opera and at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, as well as Jupiter in Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld”, also at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.

Kyros Patsalides has a big concert repertoire, and performed with orchestras such as the Berliner Symphoniker, the Orchestra dell’Arena di Verona, the Wiener Mozartorchester, the Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie, the Kammerphilharmonie St. Petersburg, the Moscow Virtuosi, the Greek Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra Cyprus in the major concert halls in Europe (Wiener Konzerthaus, Berliner Konzerthaus, Münchner Konzerthaus, as well as in the renowned Wiener Musikverein).
