Julia Kamenik – lirico spinto soprano

Already during her education, Viennese soprano Julia Kamenik began appearing within Vienna’s independent opera scene in productions such as Stallerhof by Gerd Kühr and Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro in which she sang the role of the Contessa. Her professional operetta debut was in the title role of Madame Pompadour at the Stadttheater Gießen, followed by a Robert Stolz operetta gala at the Wiener Kammeroper. She was then engaged by the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg under the auspices of the “Jeunes Voix du Rhin” for the season of 2001-02, where she interpreted a broad range of repertoire. Julia Kamenik won several prizes at international vocal competitions, such as the  “Belvedere Singing Competition” in Vienna and the “Singing Competition Ferruccio Tagliavini” in Deutschlandsberg.

Since the 2002-03 season, Julia Kamenik has appeared regularly with the Oper Bonn, where she has been celebrated as Pamina, Antonia, Mary Lloyd (Die Herzogin von Chicago), Iphis (Jephta), Euridice, Rosalinde, Helena (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Donna Elvira, Mimì, Marguerite, Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Fulvia (Ezio), Liù, Micaëla, Baronin Freimann (Der Wildschütz) and the title role in Jánácek’s Katja Kábánova. Additionally, she has appeared in guest engagements at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, the Staatsoper Hannover, the Staatstheater Nürnberg, the Theater Dortmund, the Staatstheater Oldenburg, the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, where she sang Pamina, Rosalinde, Marguerite (under Maestro Marc Piollet) and Donna Elvira, as well as the Komische Oper Berlin, where she interpreted the role of Julia de Weert in Künneke’s operetta Der Vetter aus Dingsda for three consecutive seasons.

Julia Kamenik opened her 2011-12 season with her debuts at the Musikfestival Bern (Grigori Frid’s mono opera Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank) and at the Brucknerfest Linz with the Bruckner Orchester (Donna Elvira). At the Oper Bonn she will appear as Arminda in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, Frau Fluth in Nicolai’s Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor and again as Liù. In the summer she will make her role debut as Sylva Varescu in Die Csárdásfürstin by Emmerich Kálmán at the Festival Murten Classics in Switzerland.

Alongside her opera engagements, the artist frequently appears in concert and recital. She sang at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (Die Schönheit der Schatten, hommage by Werner Schroeter), the Concertgebouw Amsterdam (Donna Elvira), the Beethoven-Haus Bonn, the Barocksaal Wien and the Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin. Her US debut was at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, where she gave an acclaimed recital with Austrian and American art songs. Tour performances have brought her to France, Italy, Slovenia, Japan and Lebanon. CD recordings include a live performance of the Requiem by Antonio Salieri (recorded by the Austrian Radio in Vienna’s Minoritenkirche) and Rossini’s Petite Messe solenelle.
