Bass
Bass JISANG RYU was born in South Korea and studied at the Yonsei University in Seoul and subsequently at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne (Germany), where he graduated in the class of Prof. Henner Leyhe. He completed his studies with Bonaldo Giaiotti and Kurt Moll and has won several international voice competitions, including the “38th International Maria Callas Grand Prix” in Athens.
Jisang Ryu’s professional debut was in 2009 in the role of Buonafede in Haydn’s Il Mondo delle Luna at the Theater Aachen. In the 2015-16 season, he debuted as Count Horn in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera at the Staatsoper Hannover and made guest appearances as Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Landestheater Niederbayern as well as Oroveso in Norma at the Theater Gent.
Between 2016 and 2018 he was a member of the ensemble of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt (Austria), where he interpreted roles such as Giorgio Talbot in Maria Stuarda, Lodovico in Otello, Dottore Grenvil in La Traviata, Tschang in Das Land des Lächelns and Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte. In 2017-18, he was heard as Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Johann in Werther and Pope in Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District.
From 2018 to 2024, he was a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, where his roles included Colline (La Bohème), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Wagner (Faust), Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin), the Bonze (Madama Butterfly), the Water Goblin (Rusalka), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Ramfis (Aida), Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Hunding (Die Walküre), Fafner (Das Rheingold), Ferrando (Il trovatore), Marquis de la Force (Dialogues des Carmélites), and many more.
During this time, he also appeared as a guest at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he appeared in excerpts from L’Invisible as part of the memorial concert for Aribert Reimann under Donald Runnicles, the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin as the Hermit in Der Freischütz, the Staatstheater Mainz as Zaccaria, and the Staatstheater Hannover as the Fifth Jew in Salome.
In recent years, he has returned to performing in Asia as well. In 2021, he appeared at the Daegu Opera House as Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, followed by Colline in 2024 and Sparafucile in 2026. He also performed the role of Sparafucile at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing in 2026. In 2025, he made his debut as Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Korean National Opera and will return there in November 2026 as Fasolt in Das Rheingold. Other engagements in Asia include Scarpia at the Seongnam Arts Center and Escamillo at the Incheon Arts Center.
Jisang Ryu maintains a busy international concert career, performing with renowned orchestras and ensembles including the Brussels Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg State Academic Capella Orchestra, the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, the National Radio Orchestra of Romania, the Berner Symphonieorchester, the Kärntner Sinfonieorchester, and the Greek National Opera Orchestra. His concert engagements have taken him to Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Korea, Japan, and China. Most recently, he performed Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Staatsorchester Braunschweig at the Theater Wolfsburg under Srba Dinić and at the Stadthalle Braunschweig under Stefan Soltész.

Der Bass JISANG RYU wurde 1982 in Südkorea geboren und absolvierte sein Studium an der Yonsei Universität in Seoul. Anschließend studierte er an der Hochschule für Musik in Köln, wo er mit Diplom und Konzertexamen bei Prof. Henner Leyhe abschloss und seine Ausbildung u.a. bei Bonaldo Giaiotti und Kurt Moll ergänzte. Er ist Preisträger mehrerer internationaler Wettbewerbe, wie z.B. dem „38th International Maria Callas Grand Prix“ in Athen.
Seine ersten Bühnenerfahrungen machte Jisang Ryu am Theater Aachen (2009), wo er mit der Partie des Buonafede in Haydns Il Mondo delle Luna debütierte. In der Saison 2015/16 folgte sein Debüt an der Staatsoper Hannover als Count Horn in Verdis Un Ballo in Maschera. Außerdem gastierte er als Osmin in Mozarts Die Entführung aus dem Serail am Landestheater Niederbayern sowie als Oroveso in Bellinis Norma am Theater Gent. Zwischen 2016 und 2018 war er Ensemblemitglied am Stadttheater Klagenfurt, wo er unter anderem als Giorgio Talbot (Maria Stuarda), Lodovico (Otello), Dottore Grenvil (La Traviata), Tschang (Das Land des Lächelns), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Johann (Werther) und Pope (Lady Macbeth von Mzensk) zu erleben war.
Zwischen 2018 und 2024 war er Ensemblemitglied am Staatstheater Braunschweig und war dort u.a. als Colline (La Bohème), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Wagner (Faust), Fürst Gremin (Eugen Onegin), Lo zio Bonzo (Madama Butterfly), Wassermann (Rusalka), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Ramfis (Aida), Don Basilio (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Hunding (Die Waküre), Fafner (Das Rheingold), Ferrando (Il trovatore) und Marquis de la Force (Dialogues des Carmélites).
Gastengagements der letzten Jahre brauchten ihn an die Deutsche Oper Berlin in Ausschnitten aus L’Invisible im Rahmen des Gedenkkonzertes zu Aribert Reimanns Tod unter Donald Runnicles, ans Theater Schwerin als Eremit in Der Freischütz, ans Staatstheater Mainz als Zaccaria und ans Staatstheater Hannover als 5. Jude in Salome.
In den letzten Jahren singt er wieder vermehrt in Asien. 2021 gastierte er am Daegu Opera House als Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, 2024 als Colline und 2026 als Sparafucile. Mit dieser Rolle gastierte er 2026 außerdem am National Centre for the Performing Arts in Peking. 2025 debütierte er als Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream an der Korean National Opera und wird dort im November 2026 als Fasolt in Das Rheingold zu sehen sein. Weitere Engagements waren Scarpia am Seongnam Art Center und Escamillo am Incheon Art Center.
Jisang Ryu pflegt eine rege internationale Konzerttätigkeit und gastierte mit renommierten Orchestern und Klangkörpern wie dem Brussels Symphony Orchestra, dem St. Petersburg State Academic Capella Orchestra, dem Aalborg Symfoniorkester, dem National Radio Orchestra of Romania, dem Berner Symphonieorchester, dem Kärntner Sinfonieorchester und dem Greek National Opera Orchestra. Konzertauftritte führten ihn nach Italien, Belgien, Dänemark, Rumänien, Russland, in die Schweiz, nach Österreich, Korea, Japan und China. Zuletzt sang er Verdis Messa da Requiem mit dem Staatsorchester Braunschweig im Theater Wolfsburg unter Srba Dinić sowie in der Stadthalle Braunschweig unter Stefan Soltész.
